about the book

Highways and Byways of The Pacific Coast chronicles a trip through America’s West Coast states in the very early years of the 20th century, not long after Yosemite became a national park and before the coming boom years transformed the countryside. Traveling mostly along back roads, but with stops in some of the region’s celebrated towns, travel writer and folklorist Clifton Johnson winds his way from Southern California to Washington state, with stops in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho, while entertaining the reader with anecdotes and tales from the many characters met along the way.

Highways and Byways of The Pacific Coast was first published by The MacMillan Company in 1908 as part of the Highways and Byways of America series.

about the author

A prolific author, editor, photographer and illustrator, Clifton Johnson produced more than 125 books and countless articles during his long career.

His travel books, including the Highways and Byways of America series, were perhaps his most popular. A self-described folklorist, he focused almost exclusively on the rural countryside and the inhabitants of small towns and farmlands as he crisscrossed the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland and France collecting stories, taking photographs and drawing pictures.

A friend of the naturalist John Burroughs and acquaintance of many of the authors and editors of his day, Johnson lived from 1865 to 1940.
