“April in the Yosemite” originally appeared in Highways and Byways of California, first published by The MacMillan Company in 1908 as part of the Highways and Byways of America series. This edition is an unabridged republication from the 1915 printing, with minor editing of the original text, new illustrations, and additional notes.

about the author

A prolific author, editor, photographer and illustrator, Clifton Johnson produced more than 125 books and countless articles during his long career.

His travel books, including the Highways and Byways of America series, were perhaps his most popular. A self-described folklorist, he focused almost exclusively on the rural countryside and the inhabitants of small towns and farmlands as he crisscrossed the United States, England, Scotland, Ireland, and France collecting stories, taking photographs and drawing pictures.

A friend of the naturalist John Burroughs and acquaintance of many of the authors and editors of his day, Johnson lived from 1865 to 1940.

about the illustrator

Tom Whitworth worked for twenty-two years in marketing, advertising and business consultancy before making the transition to his current design and illustration work.

Those years of heady corporate work, travel, and sundry adventures never eclipsed the boyhood summers in Wales or the two years spent farming in Southern England, and that affinity for the natural world largely inspires Tom’s creative ideas today.

The illustrations included here can also be found on wayside panels and other exhibit material in Yosemite National Park.
